The World: Through A Lens - London Riots Spread Nationwide

Saturday 6 August 2011 - Present;

Civil unrest breaks out in the streets of Tottenham, North London in the late hours of Saturday 6th August following the police's limp response to answering questions from the family of Mark Duggan, 29, whom was shot dead in broad daylight a couple days earlier, on Thursday 4th August. The Met's lack of co-operation to give information caused much disgust and anger within the community, and it was consequently the spark and perhaps "excuse" needed for frustration and tension to be relieved; whether it be due to financial and social stresses, unemployment concerns - or simply just not being heard.

Hundreds of people exercised their feelings in the wrong way and in a bare criminal fashion. Multiple buildings and vehicles were set alight; whilst many shops were broken into and looted. The nation watched the violence unfold live on television; unfortunately, the events in Tottenham were somewhat mirrored in neighbouring areas of Hackney, Walthamstow and Enfield, and then erupting across London with outbreaks of anarchy in Brixton, Clapham Junction and Ealing. These events in London provoked further unrest throughout city centres in England, with Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham and Bristol enduring acts of mass lawlessness.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron has condemned the attacks, stating that "You will feel the full force of the law. And if you are old enough to commit these crimes, you are old enough to face the punishment."; whilst Mayor of London Boris Johnson felt "...the real spirit of London," whilst attempting to bring the people of Battersea together in cleaning up the resulting debris from the previous night's action. Around 16,000 police officers are expected to actively patrol the streets of the British capital in anticipation of a fourth night of chaos. To date, over 650 arrests have been made, and over 100 charged regarding these events.

Ramadan 2011

That time of the year is fast approaching us - a time dedicated specifically for every muslim to reflect upon their life; to be thankful to Allah for the goodness and positivity that one has experienced (both currently and in the past), to think of those that are in a worse off position than themselves, and to pray that Allah spreads His blessings and mercy upon everyone so we can enjoy a loving, happy and respectful future with each other both in this earthly lifetime and that of the eternal one in the hereafter.

Occurring during the ninth month of the lunar calendar, ramadan usually spans across a 29 or 30-day period, withing during which a muslim fasts as part of his submission to his master and sole creator - Allah, The God, from sunrise to sunset in each of these days. Fasting is commonly known for its full "ban" of sorts from eating and drinking, but ramadan is so much more than stopping oneself from having food and water. This practice has been put into place from God for everyone to follow in order that we cleanse ourselves both physically and mentally. One also must refrain from consuming alcohol, gambling, smoking, having sex (and being involved in sexually-related acts), and behaving in a negative way. Taking all these aspects on board and abstaining from taking part in these activities shows the willpower one can have in resisting from giving into such humanly desires. Hopefully after ramadan is finished we can reflect and ponder upon how our time previously had been, and how we can look forward to living a more purer life with at least some sort of cut-down to the things we might have been craving to do beforehand. The World: Through A Lens - Rupert & James Murdoch Called In For Questioning

Tuesday 19 July 2011;

80 year-old Chairman and CEO of global media empire News Corporation Rupert Murdoch, and son James, aged 38, sit before a select committee of MP's in Central London for a session of questioning. This event is with regards to Murdoch's UK newspaper News Of The World being allegedly involved in invasions of privacy via phone hackings. From the families of murder victims Milly Dowler and Jean Charles de Menezes, to celebrities and media personalities such as actress Sienna Miller and football pundit Andy Gray - the paper is being investigated into for its participation in this criminal activity; as well as its relationship with the Metropolitan Police in keeping its activities secret. The phones of the relatives of various fallen British troops that served in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as a number of victims in the London 7/7 bombings have also been reported to have been accessed by the Sunday tabloid.

This ongoing scandal has resulted in the closure of the News Of The World from being published after being in service for 168 years. This is in connection with the resignations of key senior staff; most noticeably that of Rebekah Brooks and Sir Paul Stephenson (whom held posts of Chief Executive of News International and Commissioner of the Met Police respectively).
